China’s population has declined for the first time in 60 years, and the national birth rate has fallen to a record low of just 6.77 per 1,000 people.
China’s birth rate has been declining for many years due to a series of policies that are helping to slow the trend. The country’s population was 1.4118 billion in 2022, which has decreased by 850,000 since 2021. China’s birth rate in 2022 was also 7.52 lower than in 2021, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, which released the figures. Compared to this, the US recorded 11.06 births per 1,000 people in 2021 and the UK 10.08. In China, the number of births and deaths also increased for the first time last year. The country recorded the highest death rate since 1976 – 7.37 per 1,000 people, up from 7.18 per cent the previous year.
