KARACHI: K Electric (KE) has taken another unique initiative to address climate change in Pakistan’s energy sector by launching a mini-scale “green bill”.

Launched in November, the bill will prove to be an efficient and environmentally friendly means of conveying important billing information to K Electric customers.

In this regard, the spokesperson of K Electric said, considering the next decade, the company is engaged in adding clean, environment-friendly and green alternative energy to its generation mix.

Through innovation and digitization of its services, the company is increasingly reducing paper usage. K Electric’s next step is to extend this sustainable mindset to its more than 3.4 million customers who still receive paper-based bills.

This new and eco-friendly bill will instantly make all K-Electric customers stewards of the environment.

This simple yet effective initiative will save around 92 tonnes of paper-based waste from going to landfill sites in Karachi, save more than 4,200 trees and ensure conservation of 265 million liters of water on an annual basis.

At a time when the world is reviewing its actions under the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in preparation for COP 27, this new bill aims to promote responsible use of resources in line with SDG 12 and will provide new opportunities.

It will play an important role in protecting terrestrial ecosystems in accordance with SDG 15 while helping to address the impacts of climate change under SDG 13.

Commenting on the initiative, K Electric CEO Monis Alvi said, “Our new “Green Bill” is a perfect reflection of K Electric’s ethos and philosophy of sustainability, which we had in mind while designing this bill.

He said this bill is an immediate and sustainable step towards conserving existing resources and reducing carbon emissions. Along with this, our future plans include generating 30% of electricity from alternative energy by 2030.

Munis Alvi says paper consumption is one of the world’s major industrial processes, consuming precious natural resources. This initiative will significantly reduce K Electric’s carbon footprint and set the company as an example for other industries.
