Ahmedabad. Will Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) aggressive entry into Gujarat change the equation of state assembly elections? The question has become embroiled in political debate in recent weeks in the context of the Arvind Kejriwal-led party’s hasty run-up to the polls. AAP’s presence has made next month’s elections a three-way contest in a state where politics is predominantly bipartisan. AAP is in power in Delhi and Punjab, contesting 182 seats in Gujarat. Here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah analyze Aam Aadmi Party’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats in the home state.

Strength:- Its appeal is to lower middle-class voters, to whom the party insists it is a separate party. The party reached out to voters with several “welfare guarantees” including up to 300 units of free electricity per month, Rs 3,000 per month for the unemployed and Rs 1,000 per month for women above 18 years of age. A commitment to raising issues that affect voters can make you an attractive option.

Weaknesses:- AAP lacks local leaders with broad appeal and its grassroots organization stands nowhere compared to rival parties. The party does not have enough experience in Gujarat politics. AAP has no vote bank and the local body seats won in 2021 cannot be an indicator of its performance in the assembly elections.

Scope:- AAP has an opportunity to articulate and create a new political discourse in Gujarat. Winning a few seats in a state dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress would also give AAP a foothold and boost the party’s stature ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Dangers:- The ‘Modi factor’ can lend a hand to the BJP again. Heavy penetration of BJP in Hindutva politics.
