The Bishnoi community in Adampur Assembly constituency is fully supporting BJP candidate and former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal’s grandson Bhava Bishnoi, while the larger Jat solidarity seems behind the victory of Congress candidate Joy Prakash for the upcoming November 3 by-polls here.

Out of 1.71 lakh voters, Jats constitute the largest segment of the electorate comprising nearly one-third of the total vote. Of the remaining over one lakh voters, three sections of the community – Bishnois, BCs and SCs – comprise almost equal vote shares. Over the past few decades, Bishnois have supported Bhajan Lal, recognizing the three-time chief minister’s pivotal role in uplifting the community. Community members are known for their love and sacrifice for the environment and wildlife.

Guru Jambheshwar, also known as Jambhoji, was the founder of the Bishnoi sect.

The mobilization of Jats, commonly referred to as JPs, behind Jat Prakash gained momentum after former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his son and Rajya Sabha member Dipender Hooda camped at the Adampur center in the latter stages of polling. The father-son duo’s intense campaigning created a perception among their supporters that Jai Prakash could win the election if he got significant votes among other communities, especially the Scheduled Castes. As soon as Jayaprakash was brought into the main contest, the momentum picked up, with his supporters starting village-by-village tactics to bring others to his side.

Bhavya Bishnoi supporters say a section of Jats has always led the anti-Bhajan Lal lobby in local politics in Adampur where the Bhajan Lal family has never lost an election since 1968 when Lal was first elected to the assembly from here. During his prominence in state politics, Bhajan Lal succeeded in attracting a large number of non-Jats, a position currently claimed by the BJP in Haryana. In the Adampur by-election too, a significant section of Kumhars, Nayaks and Brahmins in several villages, especially the Scheduled Caste Chamar community, leaned towards Bhavya Bishnoi amid attempts by Congressmen to build a similar support base to reveal victory.

Remembering Bhajan Lal, Chikonbas village resident Pawan Bishnoi said: “We still remember him. He was instrumental in giving government jobs to people you can’t even imagine. Kuldeep Bishnoi cannot compete with him. We fully support Bhavya Bishnoi in this election to complete the remaining two years of the current BJP-JJP government.” Pawan Bishnoi added: “Out of the total 380 Bishnoi voters in Chikanwas village, almost all the votes will go to Bhavya Bishnoi. Other nations will also support him. Congress’s Jayaprakash will only get anti-Bhajan Lal family votes.

Sonu Malik, a Jat youth from the same village, said: “Jats vote more than Bishnods here. Except for a few families, the Jats will vote for Jayaprakash this time. Women even went to attend a poll meeting of Bhupinder Singh Hooda in our village. However, I know two families of Jats in our village who will also vote for INLD candidate Kurda Ram.”
