Pakistani politics came under fire when an alleged hacker posted audio recordings aka audio leaks of meetings held at the Prime Minister’s office and telephone calls of his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif on the dark web for bidding. Maryam Nawaz is the daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and leads the Pakistan Muslim League (N) in exile.

Reportedly hailing from India, Indishell has been a well-known name in hacking and trading for at least a decade and a half. The name first hit the headlines in 2017 when they hacked the OGRA website. Since then they have hacked thousands of Pakistani websites, including those of banks, Punjab Assembly, courts, law enforcement agencies and various government agencies.

To counter Indian hackers, Pakistan Cyber Army and groups of Pakistani hackers like PakBugs witnessed cyber war at its peak in 2007 and the next five years (2007-2012) between hacking groups of rival countries. Pakbugs hacked India’s ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited) along with other important websites including the Crime Bureau of Investigation (CBI) website.

A peace agreement was apparently reached between the two rival groups. But, after a brief hiatus, cyber warfare started again and continued for the next several years.

The situation took an unprecedented turn when PakBugs started hacking various Pakistani websites including the National Response Center for Cybercrime (NR3C) and PKNIC, the local domain name registry. The hacking of NR3C appeared to be the biggest blunder which led to the arrest of group members from different parts of Pakistan. The co-founder of PakBugs is reported to be the first Pakistani hacker who has hacked Google, Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo and multiple websites through DNS spoofing and other malicious acts.

IndiShell has taken Pakistan’s internet and power corridors by storm by placing audio leaks for sale on the dark web. The leak has not only intensified the political battle, but also raised serious questions about cyber security. The asking base price for 8GB of data was set at 180BTC. However, the announcement was made on Tuesday, via the group’s reported Twitter account (which will be deleted on 09/30) to release all files on Friday and not accept any further offers.

For the last 5-6 years, Friday has been the day of major political events (usually against PML-N) and with the timing chosen, it can be assumed that the hacker knows the importance of Friday in Pakistan’s political history and has chosen the day accordingly. So, PML-N is going to stonewall one more time on Friday, we have to wait and see.

What’s coming in audio leaks?

The hackers announced via their Twitter account that the upcoming audio files may be included

  • Exchange with journalists
  • Conversations with government officials
  • Includes conversations with military personnel
  • PM’s conversation with military chief
  • Private and public transactions.
  • Interactions between first family and extended family.
  • Conversations with judicial appointees.
  • Engagement with foreign dignitaries.
  • Instructions/orders to the personnel involved.

How politicians and journalists know about this audio leak?

In the weeks leading up to Indishell’s announcement, there was some mention of the audio leak in Pakistan’s mainstream media. Renowned journalist Rana Azim has mentioned several times that former Prime Minister Imran Khan knows about some audio tapes that can dramatically change the scene. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan while addressing students at Government College University (GC) said that another audio leak is on the way which will prove the nexus between PML-N and the Election Commission of Pakistan. How they knew the content of the audio leak before the original release remains a question.

Will the audio leak start another cyber war?

It is clear that this audio leak is expected to trigger a new wave of cyber war between the two rival countries and we can hear some sounds from across the border as well.
