Anger rose in Rishikesh over the alleged killing of Ankita Bhandari as people set fire to a factory of the prime accused on Saturday.
Ever since the recovery of Ankita’s body on Saturday morning, people have been demanding the hanging of the accused.
A mob vandalized Jamakeshwar MLA Renu Bisht’s car at AIIMS in Rishikesh. As the situation became dire, Renu left the besieged city.
The main accused in the case is Pulkit Arya, son of former state minister Vinod Arya.
BJP expelled Vinod Arya and Pulkit’s brother Ankit Arya from the party.
Ankit Arya has also been removed from the post of deputy chairman of the Uttarakhand Other Backward Classes Commission with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, the opposition burnt effigies of the Uttarakhand government and demanded strict punishment for the culprits.
Protesters ransacked Pulkit’s resort on Friday. The resort was demolished on the orders of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Expressing deep grief over the incident, Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan said: “This is a heartbreaking incident that brings shame to humanity. We have lost a daughter from Uttarakhand for whom we all mourn.”
He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.
The Speaker said that the state government and himself are with Ankita’s family, assuring that justice will prevail and the guilty will be punished.
“Now we have to think how effective is the revenue police in the area. Should the revenue police be given policing powers. Strict decisions need to be taken to investigate all illegal resorts,” he said.
Pulkit and his two accomplices have been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Teams from the municipality and revenue department reached Pulkit’s place where Vinod Arya said, “We will cooperate with the administration.”
