Washington announced on Friday that it was easing export sanctions on Iran to increase access to internet services that have been tightly controlled by the government amid a crackdown on protesters.

After the death of a woman in the custody of the country’s morality police, Tehran moved to shut down the internet in what the US Treasury said was a bid to “prevent the world from seeing its violent crackdown on peaceful protesters”.

The new arrangement will allow tech companies to “expand the range of internet services available to Iranians,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in a statement.
