Rejecting the campaign over the transgender bill issue, the federal government on Thursday announced its full support for amendments to the bill by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Moshtaq.

According to 24 News HD TV channel, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and Advisor to Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Biltistan Qamar Zaman Kaira held a joint press conference in Islamabad.

They highlighted the issue of transgender bill and termed the propaganda about it as baseless.

The federal law minister, while talking to reporters, said that the Hijra Bill was being baselessly hyped.

He said transgenders are also human beings and they have basic rights like others and it is the responsibility of the state to provide them rights.

Azam Nazir Tarar said the issue of transgender rights came up in Parliament in 2018 through a private member’s bill.

Federal Minister Tarar said that the process also included the opinion of the chairman of the Islamic Ideological Council when allegations against the bill came to light 2 years after it was introduced in Parliament.

He also said that there were allegations that this bill could be misused.

The minister admits that every law that is passed may have flaws.

Talking to the media, Prime Minister’s Adviser Kaira said the Transgender Act is not a new law and was passed in 2018.

He added that JI Senator Mushtaq did not call the Transgender Act wrong and only proposed an amendment to prevent its misuse in future.

Kaira said her coalition government at the Center fully supports Senator Mushtaq’s amendment to prevent misuse of transgender law.

PM Kaira’s adviser also said that organizations related to the transgender community also supported medical tests to determine the gender of transgenders.
