Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan needs additional funds to deal with the devastation caused by climate-induced catastrophic floods.

NEW YORK: (UrduPoint / UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Sep 23, 2022) Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has made an urgent appeal to international donors for debt relief and special programs to rehabilitate flood-hit people in the country.

In an interview with Bloomberg in New York today, he said Pakistan needs additional funds to deal with the devastation caused by climate-induced catastrophic floods.

The Prime Minister said it is impossible to revive our economy through this unprecedented destruction without substantial debt relief.

He said, “We have a recent IMF agreement which has forced us to tax electricity and petroleum products every month under very strict conditions.”

Shehbaz Sharif also said that he has spoken to the Paris Club and the IMF in this regard.

He said that while the country is already facing an economic crisis, unprecedented floods have displaced millions of people, destroyed millions of hectares of crops and destroyed thousands of houses.

The Prime Minister said, we now have to rehabilitate these lakhs of people, provide them with safe housing, medical facilities, build climate resilient infrastructure and restore agricultural lands destroyed by floods.

He said Pakistan will also have to import tonnes of wheat this year to meet its food demand as millions of acres of agricultural land have been inundated by floods.

The Prime Minister said that it is very unfortunate that Pakistan’s contribution to carbon emissions is only 0.8 percent but it is one of the ten countries affected by climate change.

Referring to his conversation with world leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Shehbaz Sharif said the entire international community realized the dire situation and extended our all-out support.

In response to a question about the import of oil from Russia, he said that he has spoken to President Vladimir Putin about this but nothing has been finalized yet.

Responding to a question about India, he said, if India wants to discuss, Pakistan is ready to discuss all outstanding issues with Kashmir at the top of the agenda.

He said the two countries must realize that we are eternal neighbors and instead of fighting each other we should use our capabilities and resources for the welfare of the people.

Responding to a question about the political situation in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said all parties should put political differences aside and join hands in this difficult time to help the flood-affected people.
